History

By initiative of Krisjanis Valdemars 10 navigation schools were founded in Latvia. One of them was Engure Navigation School, which was founded on May 2, 1875. According to the regulations on navigation schools, it was the first-stage (lower) navigation school. After 1880, Engure Navigation School became a second-stage navigation school. The regulations adopted in 1902 transformed the school into a preparatory navigation school. There were 413 pupils studying there from 1875 to 1898. Engure Navigation School functioned until World War I, when it was evacuated to Russia in 1915. When the navigation school closed, the building became the property of the civil parish.
The head of Engure Navigation School from 1877-1909 was Karlis Zandbergs.  Janis Liepins was his assistant and the teacher of special subjects from 1883-1893. Andrejs Lonfelds worked as a teacher there in 1904 and during 1906-1914.  Valdemars Alksnis worked as a teacher there from 1910-1915. Along with the persons mentioned above, other teachers, such as M.Bergs, Dilings, Eglitis, and Steinhards worked there. Among the students who were prepared for the further examinations successfully and who became famous Latvian navigators were Vilis Gelbe, Andrejs Fisers, Mikelis Grinbergs, and Janis and Melkis Pulini.
